Kentico in the Magic again in 2017

For the second year in a row, Kentico is named challenger by Gartner in the Web Content Management Magic Quadrant. The WCM have been evaluated on completeness of vision and ability to execute.

What did Gartner evaluate ?

They evaluated web content management systems vendors, the core features and their specific management tools to flow the content on various digital channels from a central repository.

Additionally to the core features of a standard Web CMS, Gartner evaluated the following capabilities:

  * Content creation functions such as templating, workflow and change management

  * Repositories that organize and provide metadata about the content

  * Library services, such as check-in/check-out, version control and security

  * Content deployment functions that deliver prepackaged or on-demand content to web servers

  * A high degree of interoperability with adjacent technologies such as customer relationship management (CRM), digital asset management (DAM) and web analytics

  * Capabilities such as real-time personalization of visitor interactions

  * The ability to integrate well with delivery platforms such as e-commerce, social media and portal software

Evaluation of Kentico and our thoughts

When it goes to Kentico, Gartner reports that "Kentico is attractive for mid market organizations (...)". We cannot deny that fact, even if Kentico as some major cases with worldwide companies as well.

The reports underlines: "(...)customers regard Kentico highly for ease of use and deployment, especially for relative simple sites.(...)" While the first part of the sentence stands mainly true in our eyes, we have seen very complex websites built with Kentico as well. Kentico CMS can handle complex website, his reliability, extensibility and latest performance improvements have proven that the system is definitely enterprise ready. That said, complex sites can only be handled by managing the complexity of the solution built on top of your CMS, you need skilled experts for that, to not end up with an unscalable, unmaintainable and disappointing solution. A good team is far less easy to find than a good CMS, while the choice of a technology is important, the execution team is of upmost importance.

Another strength underlined by the report is the fact that "(...)Kentico incorporates complementarity capability scoping into digital commerce, campaign and analytics.(...)" This is in our opinion the points that makes it the most attractive for mid market organization. Acquiring a good CMS today is not anymore the problem, you can have some for free, but your challenges are often not limited to CMS features only. If you need to go to the next level in terms of marketing optimization without having to spend time and resources in other specialized platform that you will need to integrate with your CMS to complete your tool set, you will need those complementary marketing features. Kentico in that regard stays a very attractive solution. We use to compare Kentico to an Army Swiss knife - probably not the best for each individual feature it contains - there are for each better alternatives on the market - but it is fully integrated, very well thought in terms of functionalities, and at an attractive price. The comparison stops here.

The main weakness underlined in the report is the fact that Kentico has a dual product strategy : the Kentico on premise version as evaluated in this report and Kentico Cloud, a managed consumption based WCM product. Even if the Kentico states it as a product dedicated to marketing agencies and their customers, Gartner states that it can represent a dilemma and a confusion for decision makers - options and product roadmaps should carefully be evaluated to be in line with businesses long term goals.

While we mainly agree with Gartner on this point, we believe both products are dedicated to very different scenarios. Both products are very different. In our eyes Kentico tries to get some market share from tools like Gather Content. While commercially available, we believe Kentico Cloud is still in an early stage of development but is promising and evolves at a very fast pace. We are following and evaluating the product and hope to give an in-depth review in the next months.

What does this Quadrant means for your business?

While the WCM Magic Quadrant is a good indicator of reliability and health of a provider, the highest rated in the Quadrant is often not the best fit for your business. You need to make your choice according to the size, location, internal structure of your organization, and most importantly the challenges you will have to achieve with the chosen platform.

Pay attention that Magic Quadrant is not the grail but being well evaluated is of upmost importance for the companies being in this Quadrant. They invest a lot of resources and time to be at the place they are. This stays a good indicator but be cautious, make your own opinion.

What does it mean for us, as a Kentico partner

This report reassure us in the choice of the software supplier we have chosen to partner with. We have worked with different platforms from the leader Quadrant in the past and we find Kentico to be a very reliable and extensive platform, and a strong partner.
